Thoughts

I originally met Averil through St Columba's and also came in contact with her via eco-networks in Oxford. When my children were small we often used to call round to Averil's where she would always have something nice for them to eat and drink and a selection of toys, including everyone's favourite - the dog on wheels. There are so many memories of Averil - her wonderful poetry, the early clock collection, her love of and pride in her family, the beautiful patchwork cushion covers and other craft pieces she made from her husband's old ties, and of course Mustard Seed House - her practical demonstration of care for people and the planet. A very compassionate, gifted and determined person. We will miss her. Tina, Richard, Freya and Robbie

I remember Averil fondly as a neighbour and collaborator in various Eco Home open house events in Oxford several years ago. I occasionally helped her with small DIY jobs. She once asked me to plane a few millimetres off a door in her house, which was snagging on a new carpet. I took the door off its hinges and got started on the job while Averil sat by and read me some of her poems. It was a unique gift in return for a neighbourly favour! She was a gentle, generous person with a wonderful spirit. We miss her and cherish her memory.

Averil was a lovely lady-kind, thoughtful, brilliant poet, needlewoman and environmentalist. She allowed me to borrow her Prius hybrid car when my car was having problems and inspired me to think 'green' in my daily living. I enjoyed visiting her in her 'eco-house' and helping her show the house to the public. She was a keen supporter of our Sage group, a Christian group dedicated to promoting the care of the environment in churches in Oxford. Aquainted with grief herself, she helped me through my own bereavement and even made a cushion out of my husband's ties! I thank God for her life and witness.
